WELCOME TO BEGINNING PHOTOGRAPHY!!!

Assignment 1: Your Own Website

This class requires you to maintain a website of your work and photos.  It serves as a digital portfolio for you and a place for me to check your work.  Throughout the semester I will be giving you specific assignments that will be uploaded to your website.  At the end of the semester you should have a polished/professional looking website.

Step 1:  go to wix.com and create an account.

Step 2:  Decide on a website template.  I strongly recommend a photography site since it is already organized for a photography portfolio.

Step 3:  Personalize EVERYTHING and figure out how Wix works.  At first, I am NOT going to help you with this part of the assignment.  I believe you will learn more by figuring it out yourself.  After you have played around and exhausted all options you may ask me for help.  FYI: I am a firm believer in ask 3 and then me. Wix is extremely user friendly and has tutorials.

Step 4:  Make Tabs (in this order) Home, About Me, My Portfolio, Presentations, Notes, Inspiration

Step 5: Tell me who you are!  Make your site specific to you.  You will create a page titled, "About Me."  It should have a picture of yourself that you get from facebook, your cell phone, email, instagram, etc.  You will write at least 150 words telling me who you are, what you like, what you dislike, favorite foods, activities, etc.   A good way to start may be with a quote that describes you or your goals and go from there.

GRADING:  This is a 50 point assignment.

Assignment 12: Photo Story- A Day in the Life

Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism that uses images in order to tell a story. You are going to document a day of your life to tell a story about who you are and what it's like to be you! Tell your story chronologically so it starts at the beginning of your day and ends at night. You can tell a story about a day at school or a day you weren’t at school. Be creative! Have fun!!

We will be presenting this assignment to the class. Be bold, do not be afraid to show people what your life is really like. This class is a community of artists that appreciate great artwork. I will do one, too!

Here are some shots you must include:

Signature photo: A photo that summarizes the entire issue and illustrates essential elements of the story. This might be a photo of your main character (you) doing something that you do regularly. Ideally, you’d be able to frame the shot to provide some context, maybe other people, something in the background, etc.

Overall shot: A wide-angle (sometimes even aerial) shot to establish the scene. When you do a photo story you are taking our viewers on a journey. You need to give them a sense of where they are going, an image that allows them to understand the rest of the story in a geographic context.

Close-up: A detail shot (close up) to highlight a specific element of the story. This can help give specific detail to your story.

Portrait: This can be either a tight head shot or a more environment portrait in a context relevant to the story. As mentioned above, photo essays are built around characters. You need to have good portrait that introduces the viewers to the character. I always shoot a variety of portraits, some candid and some posed.

Interaction: Focuses on the subject in a group during an activity. Images of your character(s) interacting with others.

Sequence: This is photo or group of photos that offer a step by step, how-to, or series of shots about some specific element of the story or process.

The Clincher: A photo that can be used to close the story, one that says “the end.”

Part #1: Go to the websites listed below and create a subpage in your “Notes” tab titled “Photojournalism”. Pick one photo story from these websites that spoke to you. Copy some of the pictures onto your page and write 10 sentences about:
